Traveling To Sosua
The easiest way to get to Sosua is to fly into the Puerto Plata Airport. Sosua is actually closer to the airport than Puerto Plata is and it won’t take you long at all to get into town.
However there is a set taxi rate of $25 for the trip which is quite high. When we list the hotels later you may want to inquire about a free airport pick up or see if they will pick you up for cheaper than the $25.
If you will be spending time in other cities around the country then you can also fly to Puerto Plata but most would suggest you take the bus. Caribe Tours is probably the best option, try to ask for an express bus that won’t make a bunch of stops along the way.
If you are coming from Santo Domingo the price will be around 300-350 pesos. If you are coming in from out of the country and only traveling to Sosua then just fly to Puerto Plata to make things easier on yourself.
Once you are in town you can pay overpriced taxis for tourists or use the local transportation like motorbike taxis and mini van buses. If you go the local route they will be much cheaper and help your budget out a lot.
Another important budget travel tip is to not exchange money or buy anything at the airport. You will get a terrible exchange rate in the airport and will get much better value when you get into town. At the time of writing the current rate is 50 pesos for every $1 USD.
Bring $10 for your entrance fee that gets you a 30 day tourist card and $25 for the taxi if you aren’t getting a free airport pick up. Then change the rest of your money to pesos once you are in town.
Taxis, hookers, and some hotels or restaurants may accept US dollar but you will get a better deal most of the time by paying in pesos. If you try to negotiate with a taxi or hooker in dollar they are going to try to rip you off.
